Dr. Andrew Root – "The Children of Divorce: Interpreting the Experience of Divorce for Youth Ministry and the Church" (December 4, 2013)

This presentation explores the impact of divorce on young people. In both the church and culture at-large, we view divorce as a painful occurence that is meant to be overcome by teaching a young person the "proper way" to view his or her role in the situation. Phrases like, "It wasn't your fault!," rule the day. Yet, such a perspective tends to distract us from larger realities. Divorce, at its core, thrusts young people into questioning their very existence. They asks such questions as, "If I exist because of the relationship of these two people, who am I in the world if they are no longer together?" This presentation examines this all too common cultural reality from a philosophical and theological perspective.

Dr. Andrew Root is an Associate Professor and the Carrie Olson Baalson Chair of Youth Ministry and Family Ministry at Luther Seminary
